2005 GUERNSEY HOUSEHOLD EXPENDITURE SURVEY

The States of Guernsey Policy Council has launched a survey of the Island’s spending patterns involving 1,200 households. This is the latest in a series of expenditure surveys which was initiated in 1964 and has been conducted on a five yearly basis since 1973.

The prime purpose of the survey is to help with updating the ‘basket of goods and services’ measured in the Retail Prices Index, ensuring that the items monitored reflect general purchases made by Islanders. These include, for example, the purchase of food and drink, clothing and footwear, household goods such as a TV, Microwave and Washing Machine and also package holidays and personal transport. The information provided will be essential for updating the Retail Prices Index and continuing to accurately monitor inflation in the coming years.

To help ensure the confidentiality of survey participants, the Policy Council’s, Policy and Research Unit has commissioned BMG Research, an independent and established market research company, to collect the survey data. The survey will be undertaken over the next 12 months, reflecting changing purchasing patterns throughout the seasons. Those householders selected by BMG Research to take part in the survey will be asked to record purchases over a two-week period and provide information on larger consumables.

The survey will also gather information on income and savings which will help the Policy Council to place expenditure in context. In accordance with the Data Protection Act, the survey is entirely voluntary and all information collected will be treated in strictest confidence. It will be impossible for the Government to attribute data to individual households. The Policy Council wishes to take the opportunity to firstly urge those people contacted by BMG Research to participate in the survey and secondly thank all those who have already agreed to take part.
