Fort Le Marchant Rifle Range is situated in the Vale Parish on the most northern point of the Island.
The Rifle Range is accessed from La Rue de la Fontenelle. The land is owned by a variety of agencies but the Culture and Leisure Department administers the Rifle Range.
Since 1987 the Home Department has been the authority responsible for licensing ranges on the Island. Its duties include appointing the range officers and issuing gun licences, whilst the Culture and Leisure Department gives permission for the use of firearms on the Fort Le Marchant Range.
The current authorized user groups are Elizabeth College CCF, Guernsey Rifle Club, Annemarie Shooting Club and the Guernsey Police Force.
The range consists of firing points (in the form of raised mounds) at 600yds, 500yds, 300yds, 200yds, 60yds and 40yds. The range consists of five lanes and has a gallery with Hythe frames, stop butt and markers shelter.
The Police have also constructed their own 50metre range for training of firearms officers.
To book the range, the Department requires the request in writing a minimum of ten days in advance of the proposed date. All users of the Range must act in strict compliance with the agreed Range Orders set out by the Department and the Firearms Ordinance.
The red flags are raised 30 minutes before firing begins to warn public and shipping that shooting is about to commence. Safety barriers with “NO ENTRY” signs are positioned across paths and roads. A lookout is posted to instruct shooters if any person or domestic animal is about to enter the danger area in front of the firing point actually in use or any vessel about to enter the sea danger area.
Under the Firearms Ordinance 1987 it is an offence for any person or vessel to enter the danger area when shooting is taking place. Shooting is not permitted at night or on a Sunday.
An annual programme of shooting can be found in the attachment.
