Delancey Park is situated in the north east of the Island in the parish of St Sampson and offers commanding views over the Little Russel to the islands of Herm and Sark.
The main access to this 16.5-acre site is in the northeast corner, through Mont Morin. The park can also be accessed from the south next to St Sampsons Secondary School, Rue de la Corbe or La Rue Des Monts.
The Park has no formal gardens and very few flowering shrubs but has areas of wild scrubland. During the 1990’s all the Elm trees in the park were lost to Dutch Elm disease, which has led to a major tree-planting programme by the Environment Department.
The park consists of a large playing field that slopes down at the north end. The field holds a full sized football pitch during the winter, which is used by the Ernst and Young Business League, the Sunday Soccer League and St Sampsons Secondary School.
During the summer a cricket pitch is marked out around the permanent artificial cricket wicket which is block booked by the Guernsey Cricket Association.
An Artificial Turf Pitch (ATP) is located in the northeast corner of the park, which consists of three tennis courts with Netball and Hockey pitch markings for School use. The main user of these facilities is the school during term time.
A bowling green, which is the home of the Northern Bowling Club, is situated on the east side of the park together with a clubhouse.
During school breaks the students use the park as a general recreation area. The central feature of the park is the obelisk plinth, which is constructed of dressed granite stone. Bench seating is provided at various locations throughout the park with excellent viewing points of Herm and Sark.
Summer 2002 saw the completion of an off-road competition standard cycling track within the park, which the Guernsey Velo Club uses for circuit racing and sports development. The circuit is 660 metres long with a minimum width of 4 metres.
The cycle circuit was a joint venture with the Velo Club and the Culture and Leisure Department. The condition set by the Department was that the Club would contribute £25,000 of the £85,000 total cost with the remaining monies from the Department’s Capital fund. The circuit was officially opened in October 2002.
A community funded skateboard area has been constructed near the car park. The project was led by Michelle Levrier and Clive De La Haye. As the chosen site for the skateboard area was on a slope, Guernsey Technical Services designed and managed the construction of the flat bitmac surface for skateboard ramps. Several local charities, private companies and individuals donated funds, equipment and labour to this community project.
